one of the problems with spelljamming is the difficulty of long distance
communication.

one form of instantaneous singalling is growing in popularity, despite
its near idiotic danger and extreme impracticality.

what you do is this: you take a troll, and cut it in unequal halves. the
sender takes the larger half and goes off, the receiver takes the
smaller half, magically preserving it to stop it from dying. as everyone
knows, the larger portion will regenerate to make an entire troll.

when the signal needs to be sent, the troll is then cut into three
pieces. the largest piece then starts to regenerate: the piece kept by
the signal recipient which suddenly starts to regenerate; instantly and
no matter how far away!

with larger and more complex arrays of trolls (and possibly the use of a
bacon slicer for more accurate division) longer messages can be sent.
but that would be *far too silly*.
