Subject: Re: Various things about Practical Planetology
Greetings, all.
I have a few questions re how people with Practical
Planetology have dealt with things in the book. First,
how do the maps they provide work? They say they are
using something called an "Eckert Equal Area
Projection". I just don't know how the damn thing is
supposed to fold to turn into a globe. For one thing,
the description of Falx says Tentacles-Grip-Tightly
and Brain-in-the-Skull are at opposite poles. On the
map, one city is at the top, and one is at the middle
line. The second problem is with the map of Radole. It
places the gate to the Negative Energy Plane on the
middle line, halfway betweent the edge of the map and
the shield mountains that divide the dark and the
light sides. But the gate is supposed to be at the
coldest part of the planet, presumably the part
furthest away from the sun. So, I have two mental
pictures of how to "fold" the maps so that they become
a globe. The first is to roll the map longwise into a
cylinder, so the bottom edge touches the top, then
fold the ends of the cylinder into hemispheres,
creating a globe. This agress with Falx, because the
horizontal center line becomes one pole, and the top
and bottom edges of the map become the other pole.
However, it does not agree with Radole, because then
the Negative Energy gate is about halfway between the
shild mountains and the point on the planet furthest
from the sun. The second way of folding I thought of
is to make a cylinder by touching the shorter, curved
edges to each other, and streching the top and bottom
edge until it forms a single point. This puts the
Negative Energy gate at the coldest point on Radole,
but it has problems too. First, the habitable band on
Radole then only goes around half the planet, from
pole to pole, and on the other side the sunside and
darkside meet with nothing in between. The second
problem is that it puts the cities on Falx at the
wrong places, one at the north pole, and the other on
the equator.
If anyone knows where I might find a description of an
Eckert Equal Area Projection, or has a better idea of
how to visualize the maps as globes, please let me
know.
Thnx :-)
