Thank you!  Great post!  I have something similar to the Church of the Sun
IMC, but along a different tack.  IMC, the pan-spherical being known as
Dhum is worshipped by evil cabals who seek Dhum's awakening and the
subsequent destruction of the spheres that they believe would ensue.  Many
spheres IMC have features which have been identified by the cabals as
physical manifestations of Dhum.  Like the Church of the Sun, Dhum is not
considered to be a deity of any kind yet the priests of the cabals find
that they are capable of casting spells.  The cabals operate secretly and
in most spheres their presense has gone unnoticed for centuries.  They have
been known (only by those who run the cabals, of course) to engineer the
establishment of entire empires as tools to use in their quest, as puppets
on their strings, as curtains behind which to move unseen.  I'll have to
look up some of my old material on the various cabals and post it.
