Note that you don't have to magic the entire crew. A single, very loyal
10th level warrior onboard should be enough to keep the crew in line,
considering that they're probably 0-level, or at most levels 1-4. Or, you
could just make sure the helmsman is trustworthy. Point being, the average
human being in AD&D is vastly less powerful than an AD&D "hero," unlike
real life, so real life security concerns do not always apply.
