I realized I hadn't addressed this point below, and don't want it to seem
as if I'm glossing over any telling points you make. When someone makes a
good point, I try to acknowledge it; likewise, if it's not necessarily a
good point, I try to point out the problems I see. Either way, response is
good.

Why do you conclude that zombies don't have some kind of "life force?"
It's not life, of course, it's negative energy. Nevertheless, do you have
any kind of official backing for this idea? What makes a zombie
qualitatively different from a ghoul in terms of negative energy?
(Incidentally, I don't think the Magic Jar spell itself differentiates
between intelligent and unintelligent undead in terms of what can be
possessed, just as it doesn't state that puddings--which have about as
much mind as a zombie--are immune to Magic Jar.)

If you can't find an offical ruling, I stand by my statement that it
"sounds like a house ruling."
