This message is for all the fantasy role-players out there.
Have you come across a great adventure hook? Did you wish you had
more available? I'm not talking about a full-fledged adventure
with all the encounters laid out; I'm talking about the kernel
that makes up all the GREAT adventures: The one-liner plot idea
that a creative GM can turn into a memorable adventure.
We once had such a resource, The Adventurer's Journal also known
as The Fantasy News Network. It had great kernels of adventures
in the form of little news stories, like the following:
===========================================================
Forgotten Realms: Western Heartlands: Elturel:
UNDEAD KILLED IN HIGH DISTRICT
Late last night, the cleaning service at the Ruby Staterooms
inn on Carpenter Way discovered the decapitated body of a
female guest, Mrs. Vemuren. A detachment of Hell Riders was
called in to investigate only to discover, by the light of
day, that the victim was in fact a vampire. Along with the
body--which showed signs of cutting wounds--were several
vials that appeared to once have contained holy water con-
secrated to Lathander. The guards are looking through papers
found in the room for leads, although this is no longer
being considered a crime. "Whoever did this deserves a
medal: From preliminary evidence, we think the vampire may
have been involved in a plot to bring in more of its kind
from the eastern realms."
This secluded inn in the high district is known for the pri-
vacy given to its guests. Innkeeper Mursheeb the Softspoken
told the guards that Mrs. Vemuren checked in only last week,
and left instructions not to be disturbed by day. Some are
suggesting this killing may have been linked to another vam-
pire "killing" in Waterdeep last month.
===========================================================
Can't you think of at least several ways this could be made into
a GREAT adventure? The Adventurer's Journal came out periodically
by email in plain vanilla ASCII. It was published in 3 volumes of
20 issues, from October 24, 1992 in the hands of Doug Tran to
February 1, 1995 through Mike Phillips. Now with Mike's approval,
I, Leonard Scott, am editing The Adventurer's Journal. If you
would like to subscribe to the next issue due on January 1, 1999,
please send an email to kag_normal@???????.com and include in the
subject or body words to the effect of "I want my FNN."
I need interested people to submit GREAT adventure kernels in the
form of news articles. These articles should be grounded in a
world--even if it's a homebrew or original world. Follow the
example below: I need the World: Region: City (if applicable)
followed by a title and then the article itself. I will edit it
to fit the proper format and for spelling. Of especial interest
are multi-part stories meant to be told over several issues which
allow a complicated plot to fully develop. For multi-part
articles, please label each one as such.
I also am extremely interested in getting other types of pieces,
All from a character's point of view:
* Character "Journals"
* "Classified Ads"
* "Interviews" with Characters
* "Instant NPCs" with history
Submissions can be sent to myself, kag_normal@???????.com.
Previous issues can be found in html form at

Example format:
===========================================================
Forgotten Realms: The Vilhon Reach: Surkh:
GITHYANKI STRONGHOLD SIGHTED!
A team of adventurers lead by a skilled ranger discovered
the stronghold of the reputed githyanki raiders that at-
tacked the Solemn Sword Inn in Surkh last month, killing
twelve. It is 13 days journey to the north of the city,
beyond the local mountain range known as The Guardians. The
team of 9 spotted the monolithic structure in a mountain
valley, but felt it unwise to approach closer to determine
the strength of the alien force. These githyanki are ex-
tremely war-like and are skilled in the tactics of small
unit combat. City Elders are looking for a way to remove the
threat without risking an all out war. Interested adventur-
ers with the power and experience to deal with this kind of
danger are invited to come to Surkh to work out suitable
monetary arrangements.
