WOW! I love this idea! Since some of us have been labeling helms as
artifacts, why NOT have them absorb/develope curses after a while! How
about, anytime the helmsman is killed while in an active helm? Have the
item make a secret saves vs disintegration or magical fire {the worse of
the two as per the material}, or develope a side effect? The severity is
up to the devious DM.
Then, you've got the Archane who can service these defective helms {"Oh,
your helm's developed a murderous phantom? Most strange, here, let me
purge it for you, for a mere 10,000 gold pieces?"}....
