Subject: Re: Web: Anacostia
Hi folks. As I'm writing this, I'm refreshing the Anacostia web site. A
few weeks back I had mentioned that I was giving the place an overhaul, and
attempting some design changes. Well, to make a long story short, those
wonder changes quickly took on the proportions of a watchlight maurauder.
So, the site doesn't look much different at all. Subtle changes only.
Also, I will *not* be moving the site. I had a Geocities directory set up
for it, but I have abandoned that idea. I'm an "old pro" at this Internet
stuff, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff. But I wasn't prepared for the
overall negative reputation of Geocities and it's infamous pop-up windows.
Specifically, a lot of people I know will ignore any site with "geocities"
in the domain, regardless of the content. I guess the assumption is that
if a site if good, it won't be on Geocities. But none of that is really
important. The important part is that the Port of Anacostia Spelljammer
website will remain where it is until further notice. I'll worry about
disk space and additional web keepers when it becomes a major issue that I
can no longer avoid.

But, this beings me to another thing I want to mention. The Anacostia web
site is *very* complex, and very large (400+ files and pushing 4 MB). It
has become almost impossible for me to maintain the site on a timely
manner. (Contrary to popular belief, and the negative press of my enemies,
I *do* have a life that doesn't involve the Internet... spare time doesn't
come by me often).
So, I'm going to make the site open for submissions. If you have some
information you want to see mounted at the Anacostia web site, please take
the information and do some basic HTML markup. This will become the "body"
of the page. Let me deal with the header and footer stuff (those are
standardized throughout the site). Also, give me some suggestions for how
to interlink this "body" with the rest of the site. If you look around the
site you will notice that all of the pages have a toolbar that lets the
user jump around the site looking for certain types of information. That's
the stuff I'm referring to. I'll handle that part of the linking; just
give me some pointers on which links to put down there.

So there you have it. Anacostia is going public. Sending me a partal web
page is still no guarantee that it will appear within a week, but it will
certainly speed things up. I still have old listserve posts from the days
of cornell.edu sitting on my system somewhere, waiting to be spun into the
web site.  Need I say more?  %}

Enough of that, I'm going back to uploading. If you hit the site now, you
might get errors, because I'm doing a clean restore. But, the site should
be finished by midnight, Eastern time.
	Keep 'jammin.
