This isn't really different, but I developed the sidhe a little in a dark
SJ game I ran for a few weeks sometime ago. I used the sidhe as the ancient
spacefarers that uplifted their elvish kin  into a spelljamming race. They
developed the helms and tamed the first starfly plants into ships. The
sidhe cruised around in 100+ ton ships and ruled the spacelanes.

Then something happened(I didn't work that out) that caused them to
withdraw from the affairs of the elves. I had thought to make it that a
civil war among the sidhe broke out, or they became satisfied that the
elves were on their way to becoming a racial powerhouse, so they withdrew
to the Outer Spheres.

Now, with the IEN reviled by many in space, the sidhe may once again return
to help their brethren, bringing new ships and fearsome technology to the
elves. Then the scro and goblinkin will shake in fear....
