Hmmm. One thing I've never really liked about the Dragon PC races is that
they always wimp them out something major. If I'm remembering the
Doppelganger article correctly, they limit the use of ESP to something
like three times per day. I wouldn't mind so much if they would give a
logical reason, though. Just say, "This sub-race of Doppelganger is
significantly altered from the standard variety. Members of the sub-race
have trouble using telepathy for extended periods of time, and are
typically much weaker than the standard 6HD (?) Doppelganger. On the
positive side, they tend to be more social and less xenophobic, and are
able to advance in a character class." Of course, abilities such as the
mimic and ESP are so integral to the character of doppelgangers, I would
argue that if you feel these powers would unbalance the campaign, it's
better to create an entirely new race rather than altering the old one
beyond recognition.
