Actually, I like them. Of course, I haven't and won't use the ship combat
systems from WCC or the original boxed set. If I want to wargame I'll play
Warhammer, or Silent Death, or something like that.
It seems that a lot of people on here have a very warlike attitude to
Wildspace. Personally, I don't think any ship will attack another without
a good reason (yes there are exceptions, but they aren't the rule). A pirate
will attack, but only if it looks like easy pickings or if he's desparate.
Warships will attack their foes, as will privateers. a MOW captain would
more likely let a nautiloid pass and go to gather allies, or attempt to follow
it by spell or flight to it's base. (Naeleran's Rune of Direction: lev 3,
components VSM, duration 1 week/level: material component 2 silver arrowheads:
This spell enchants two arrowheads so that when the command word is spoken,
they will point directly at each other. This effect only works as long as
both arrows are in the same space {same sphere, or same plane, or in the
Phlogiston}. This effect is not blockable by any means short of dispelling
or disrupting the magic.)
There will be heavily armed ships in space, but not all of them will be heavily
armed. And as many will be less armed than the 'standard' ones. It's a
balance of availability, cost, and effectiveness.
