I had a little argument about that with my players a short while ago.
Luckily they really don't know too much about SJ mechanics so I could
pass it off as bein due to differences in mass, thus maintainin a general
air of believability in my campaign. However, I have noticed some
inconsistencies - to say the least - in TSR's ship designs myself as
well. Even more gross is the fact that the ship contruction system in the
WCC seems only partially compatible with existing ships. Also, it's very
vague. Now, I can't be bothered too much by those faulty ship designs -
hey, it's fantasy physics - by I do find it very bothersome that if use
the WCC construction system to redesign an existin space ship, you almost
always fail miserably. Thus I am adjustin the construction system to come
up with something somewhat more plausible yet compatible, but I really do
think that TSR should've come up with a good system themselves in the
first place. I mean, what's the big deal in designin your own ship if all
it's ever gonna is just a heap of crap compared to most existing ships?
The option for improvement are limited. Further, some existing ships
which are supposed to be top-notch, long-term, state-of-the-art vessel,
can be easily done better by usin the WCC system. All in all, things are
just too inconsistent. TSR did a nice try, but they just weren't good enough.
