that was the idea, can a Halmsman or other mage cast spells through the
helm. Like having a priest sitting on the helm and having a mage cast a
spell on the helm to have it cast on the ship??

I think coating the entire ship with silver, giving it a mirror like
finish, would make it harder to see. But that would be so expensive
that you would be better off hiring a mage either to create a (new)
camouflaging magic item or to cast a lot of hallucinatory terrain
spells.
