Hi everyone, of course I know that someone with a high dexterity can have a negative armor class, especially since it was pointed out that a full plate + shield gives ac 0 anyway. However in my old campaign only one of four characters had a high dexterity and ironically he was the only one with an armor class above 0. Beorn Blaki the Bold, a human clerik of Mishakal, had a plate + 1 and a shield + 2 totalling for -1 ac. Abel was enhanced by a forest guardian (don't ask...) and had a natural armor class of 2, a cloak of displacement, gauntlets of dexterity and a shield, totalling for -2 ac. Toril Elfsmasher, human dual class warrior / mage, had a plate mail, a shield + 1 and a defender + 3, totalling for -2 ac. Sithel Clearwater, Dargonesti sea elf wizard, had bracers(4) and dexterity 16, totalling for 2 ac. Usually my players have only got one, or in rare cases two, high stats. So if you want to boost dexterity for a better armor class instead of assigning your high value to your prime requisite, be my guest, but I assumed my players would not. However one of them really did follow your conclusions here and made an elf thief / mage with 19 dexterity due to the lack of magical armor. Nevertheless I prefer it that way since negative armor class would still be the exception and not the "normal" state of being as it was in my old campaign. I hope I made any sense here.
