You could have it controled by the helmsman, in Treky words the
spelljamming envolope could be used to amplfy the thought patterns of
the helmsman. But that could swamp the helmsman both controling the ship
and the sphere!

       I agree the sphere of annihilation is a superkill weapon and
would
start an arms race.  That's why I make it act like disentigration
spells.
       The movement rate of a sphere controlled by a wizard is, I
believe, 12.
So the darned thing couldn't even cover a hex in a round (unless you
have a
very liberal DM).  So that limits its usage as a nuke.  Most ships could
outrun/out maneuver it with ease.  You cannot launch a sphere out of a
catapult or modified ballista, and I don't thing it could be shot from
an
accelerator.  The only way to move it is to have someone mentally
control it,
and that'd take forever.
