Proxies aren't avatars. They're high up servants of the Powers berk.
(translation:proxies are really high level servants of gods bub.) Avatars
are lesser manifestations of a Power's real form on the Prime for when he
doesn't want to leave his kip. (translation: an avatar is the
manifestation of a god's essence on the Prime Material plane, for times
when the god can't leave his home on the outer planes.) Ilsensine's
avatar is a big brain with two tentacles. Ilsensine itself calls the
Outlands it's kip.

In the first edition Monster Manual, Mind Flayers had both magic and
psionic powers. After the first edition's psionics rules were dumped,
Mind Flayers were written with only magic powers. In the Psionics HB they
were given back their psionic powers, but only at the DM's option. In the
Mounstrous Manual, there are two types of Illithids: those with psionics
(who have a beak) and those without (who have no beak). The Illithiad
prefers the Illithids to use psionics, but the "Arcane Mind Flayer" is
there for campaigns that don't use psionics, or who use the Monstrous
Manual's two species.
