Actually, back when I was a lowly player (around 1982-84) I was led by my DM
to believe Mindflayers were from "outer space." They had mental powers, ray
guns and strange magic (technology). We first met them in the Barrier Peaks
adventure which had a lot of technological devices.

When the Spelljammer system came out I used those early encounters to give
players a sense that they were dealing with mindflayers in their own element.
I replaced the technology with bizarre magic that only worked for Illithds or
Alhoon.
