After going through the Illithid Monstrous Arcana, I noticed several things of interest. * They list Lugribossk as a proxy (an avatar) of Ilsensine, the Illithid god from Planescape and the Monster Mythology book. Perhaps, he was picked because of his (its) power in the Astromundi Cluster where Lugribossk is the Illithid god, not Ilsensine. Just a thought. * The silly rumor that Illithids are really mutated humans is finally "offically" dispelled. An excerpt formt he Astromundi Chronicles is sited as highly unlikely. * Two articles that would be good to have if your running Illithids in a Spelljammer game are not mentioned in the book. One is Mindstalkers in Dragon #245. It presents Dwarvern specialists who hunt Illithids for a living. It fits in well in the Astromundi setting where their are so many Illithids and the dwarves are the spheres mercenaries. The other is the Mindscapes of Athas and Beyond from Dragon Annual #2. That article has some useful information for anyone using the Skills & Powers version of Psionics. It also has a write up of the Mind Flayer in that system. The major point that I noticed is they significantly reduced the number of psp's to make the mind flayer a bit more reasonable: 50+3d10 (instead of 1d100+250). * They state the maximum infravision range for a mind-flayer is 480 feet and they cannot see in the normal spectrum. This would not make since in wild space where most objects are many miles away when first sighted. Do Illithids always have to have mind-controled slave races aboard their ships just to have look-outs. IMO, Mind flayers have the Infravison ranges listed, but can also see in the normal spectum with some difficulty (bright light still causes them great pain). * They actually state that mind flayers should be psionic and that the magical versions are for campaigns that do not have psionics. The truth of the matter is that when 2nd edition came out, psioinics were not a part of it (yet), and the monster compendium entry for Mind Flayers just substitued magical psioinic-like abilities for that publication. The Complete Psionics Handbook came out much later and had a conversion in the back. Any other observations? Terry TLHawk@???-??.org
