and why, pray tell, if this new technology was so important didn't someone
simply get a non magical engine to go in and get the ship {or at least the
helm } out ?
I really like the adventure lead in though, well thought out. By the way,
how did you arrive at the figure of fifty years for the ship to drift thru
the sargasso or was that simply a guess ?

I wanted enough time to pass that peace would have been achieved and most of
the survivors of the battle would be dead. As far as a non-magical helm one
wouldn't have been available on such short notice. Once line of sight was
lost, searching for it would have been problematic.
I could also say that the only ship that saw it happen was the enemy vessel
with the navigator aboard.
