The "aura" of the ship if you will. The helm emphisizes this aura, and it interacts with The Very Fabric Of Space Itself. Thusly, the various sails, oars, etc cause a discontinuity in space, when their positions are changed the discontinuity causes a ripple effect in space, allowing very tight turns, etc. This is almost identical to the way they would react if they were interacting with air or water on a normal boat.
