The problem is that powerful mages would dominate the game if you give them many long range spells. In our group are two mages(LVL.15&11) and a priest(LVL.10). In an encounter with ships of tonnage <60 it is not uncommon that they teleport or use dimensional reduction (I do not know the term in english) to reach the other ship and flame everything while the rest of our group is boring themselves to death. Giving mages long range fighting power of this scale(12d8=>54HP=>5 Hullpoints) will make conventional weapons useless because of their reloading time and their low hit probability. You have not to forget that a mage has 100% chance of damaging the enemy. Therefore it would be better to restrict the research of such spells. Bjoern
