Actually A heavier weapon could be
                                   a) Stouter, a re-enforced version of a
standard weap[on
                                   b) Have a larger missile

                                   c) Be physically larger than the li8ghter
weapon... Or a combination..

This can result in longer range more heavy hitting missiles.... compare
the onager, catapult and trebuchet.

As far as why they might have shorter ranges in space... it may be a
function of recoil... the heavier weapons may cause a ship to roll slightly
in response to the firing action.. This would decrease the weapon's
"effective" range but not its extreme capability because of the chnge in
angle.
