steering without helmsmen

I was wondering how helms like lifejammers, furnaces, and pumps are
controlled. With a regular spelljammer helm, the helmsman sitting in
the chair controls where the ship goes. Do other helms have some
pseudo-aircraft controls, a magic psychic link to whoever grabs hold
of 'em, or what, in your campaign?
