Regarding the Jade Spider ship, I agree that it's an absurd design.
Or rather, the materials are absurd. I like the idea of the Jade ships
being reserved for drow of great importance.
It is possible that the drow use the design on a regular basis, but
that the average ship is made for more common materials. In terms of
mechanics, just replace the adamantite with a more common metal, like steal,
and replace the gems with stained glass. This could be the more common
variety of Jade Spider. The look of the deluxe models could be kept by
clever use of paint and other conventional decorating techniques.
