I've been working on a 3-D concept for the flow that works something
like this:
The 'flow is indeed (by all appearances) essentially 2-d, though with
a finite thinkness, AT LEAST thick enough to completely engulf even
the largest Sphere.
However, unbeknownst to the poor inhabitants, the ENTIRE universe is
actually stretched about a HUGE Spherical shape (not unlike how the
Earth's oceans are wrapped around a sphere). The curvature, in fact,
is so slight that most are completely unaware of this.
To test out the hypothesis, I mapped the only available of known space
I had (the one at
http://www1.tpgi.com.au/users/ibowley/spelljam/flow.html)
over a large sphere, covering perhaps 1/3 of the surface area, with
the Arcane Outer Flow leading to "unknown" space (the remaining 2/3).
The "flows" themselves are similar to the lines on a Soccer ball in
concept, though legends speak of an ultimate "source" of these which
eventually leads to a huge "sink" hole as well.
One could argue that this sphere is in a sense a 4th dimensional
object - a HyperSphere if you like _ thus impossible to be perceived
by us 3-d creature unless you manage to circum navigate the flow!
What lies beyond either edge? Hmmm...been thinking about this, but I
figure ABSOLUTELY NOTHING or maybe even a region or "normal"
semi-infinite space on the inside, and perhaps the Astral Plane on the
outside (actually, one could argue that the inside *could* be the
ethereal plane).
I have other, even crazier ideas, including what happens at either
"pole" of this hypersphere!

If you are right and the flow is only 2-D then spelljammers are like
submarine in that the air envelope become like a bottle around the ship so
This may mean the flow is in 3-d but I think the single dimension of paper
make it harder to know
