        Machiavelli might have said that, but he would have ideally said
that it's best to be feared AND loved.  <snicker>  He would also then
describe how to achieve this.  Italy wasn't a nice place when Machiavelli
wrote this, and it shows.
        Two other famous expressions attributed to Machiavelli:

        "The ends justify the means."
        "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

        Andru of Bral certainly read this classic work from Terraspace, yes
serrie bob.  Not only is the Prince a good source of ideas for villians, but
for anyone with a lot of political power.  The horrid truth of life is that
a lot of what Machiavelli said is still valid, and is still practiced by
people in the political and military arenas.  The tools and weapons have
changed, but the game it still the same.
