We played Expedition to the Barrier Peaks when it first came out and
references to it continued throughout our campaign. (One of the PC and
several NPCs are from our Modern Day Earth) When we started playing SJ it was
just explained that the technology came from a sphere where science ruled.

I hope the same reasoning will be used for the new Tales of the Comet box
set.
