Premise:
Orc god gets upset with an elven god.
Orcish gods "tell" all their orcish shaman to hunt and destroy elves. (
Or maybe just hunt and destroy everyone else)
Orcs will invariably bully lesser golinkin (goblins, kobolds, etc.)
into doing their dirty work. How often do ogres turn down the chance to
fight and loot on a large scale?
You now have a sizeable labor and military force being led by shaman
inspired by a god. On many isolated worlds in many different speres at
about the same time.
As far as naval battles: Why? What can there possibly be on an elven
warship to attract the loot hungry hordes of goblinkind. They're going
for isolated groundling cities. Through sheer numbers and the empty
vastness of space it becomes pretty tough to stop this plan. So what if
humanoids' ships are slow? I'm think'n that they should be able to keep
up with a planet or orbiting station well enough to crash into it. Upon
crashing it becomes a pitched ground battle. The humanoids will have
the advantage of numbers and ferocity, if not surprise. I don't think
those Elven Imerial Naval vessels are going to fire their large weapons
at individual orcs marauding through elven streets full of evlen
warriors and evlen civilians.
This probably won't seem like much of a war to the humanoids, but it
sure will to the already spread thin forces of the Elven Navy. Since
the elves won and the victor writes the history it was a grand campaign
indeed.
The more powerful of the original orc shaman probably would have had a
better understanding of their god's intentions. These may have used
their initial successes to gather more effective space fleets. Through
divine inspiration teeming up to form larger raiding forces with other
shaman doing the same. These larger forces could then menace larger,
richer, elven settlements where more loot would allow purchse of even
better equipment. Note that only at this stage does actual spelljamming
and phlogiston travel become necessary. The arcane are way too gularly
cover any major comercial routes between the spheres. Add to all of
this ships dedicated to fighting in illithid spaced, neogi space,
beholder space, etc.... Diplomats sent to spelljamming races such as
the lizardmen or other "friendly" empires need ships assigned to protect
them. Other ships would be sent off as scouting patrols to gather
information on things like the location of "new" spheres and the finding
of such oddities as major sargasso's, and the salvaging of forgotten
battle-sites.(possibly from the first humaniod war). This doesn't even
mention the training bases, response fleets for emergencies, and the
vast logistical requirements of what is listed above.
The elves can definitely keep a lot of ships really busy and still need more!

On a side note:
An interesting thing about mixing spelljamming and planescape is
that the flow is cut off from all other planes.
If I had somehow gotten a god really pissed off at me what could I do?
1. seek protection from a god who is an enemy of the god you angered.
2. go hide on a spelljamming base in the flow.
the god can't get you himself, and any minions he sends your way will be
cut off from his help(either is powers or information)
You could easily use this several ways to write an adventure.
the PC's are hired to get someone from a base in the flow and
bring him to a crystal sphere--where the angry deity can take action
with or without the parties knowledge/consent.
the PC's are hired by a guy to stop a group of NPC's from doing the above to him/her
maybe its the PC's who need to hide. They have to find such a
base, get permission to live there, and find a means of support while
fighting off bounty hunters and such like sent by the angry god
Consider the implications of mixing in the blood war and you can
have demons from both sides hiding out and hunting down others in the
flow (where they will have limited powers, being cut off from there home
planes). These demons will need the services of spelljammers(willing,
unwilling, unknowing?..)to take them where they need to go.
Maybe that man you just "rescued" from suspended animation
floating in the phlogiston was there deliberately and you are now
innocent bystander victims of whatever vengeance is on its way.

By the way, if anyone can give me a listing of what Dungeon magazine
issues contain spelljammer adventures I would appreciate it.
