VALD!  I didn't know you were on the list.

Tinker Gnomes WERE INTENDED to be Krynn-specific.  Check out THE COMPLETE
BOOK OF GNOMES & HALFLINGS.  Things just didn't work out that way.  People
began to think of the Tinker Gnome as the "generic" gnome and the rock gnome
as more of a "rarer" gnome, or some campaigns just got rid of ALL gnomes
except the tinker gnomes.

That's just how things happened.

IMC, the gnomes aren't tinkers.  They do build things, and most of their
wizards use the Mechinician Kit (see the Sha'ir's handbook), but they're not
tinkers because their machines WORK.  Right now they're as advanced as the US
during the Industrial Revolution, but NO CARS--EVER.  (my gods won't allow it
;)
