So,  put a bit more politely,  you are basing your opinion on the
description of the Wild Mage in the _Tome of Magic_?  Okay,  makes sense,
I can see where'd you would get that.  Since the act of helming a ship
involves no random die rolls,  it would not be affected by the wild mage
chart.  I still don't think it indicates an "official" TSR postion on this
question (since it is an inference from a source,  rather then a quote
which directly addresses the question),  but it certainly makes a reasoned,
logical basis for having wild mages helm just as any other mage would.

In fact,  I'll even go so far as to say that it is more logical then my
position,  because I make a series of inferences from sources which do not
even directly address the class in question.

Of course,  all of this is campaign dependent,  in my campaign it works my
way,  in yours your way.:)
