Fellow Spelljammers,
Here it is, as promised. My idea on how the navy got its start.
Hope you all enjoy it. It's a little rough around the edges, so please
excuse spelling/grammer errors.

                               ELVEN IMPERIAL NAVY
The Elven Imperial Navy had its start (unfortunately) in Realmspace. It
started as a few elves going up into space in the best groundling ships
they could get their mitts on. Then, after a few wildspace exploration
missions, one group of elves came across a starfly plant's fruit (see
the second SJ MC). After discovering this fruit, the elves sought out
its source, and werelucky enough to find a starfly tree on an asteroid.
The elven mages and priests began all sorts of experiments on the tree,
and discovered that they could make better, more maneuverable, and
prettier ships out of the tree. They also discovered other uses for the
tree, its fruit, and its properties...
The elves began to design ships, and the mages worked feverishly
on the design. They tried different designs of ships, based at first on
groundling ships. These designs were harder to grow and also clumsy.
Then one night an elven mage was examining the starfly fruit, and he had
an idea. He took his idea to the mages in charge. The idea was simple:
If the fruit naturally grows into a "butterfly" shape, then why not
design butterfly ships? These ships turned out to be manuverable,
easier to grow and maintain, and also became a formidable force in
wildspace. These ships became the standard for elves everywhere.
While the elves and their new ships were still green (no pun
intended) the goblins came. It was only a small fleet of goblins, but
it tested the elves. The battle was months long, and in the end the
elves drove the goblins away from their asteroid base. In fighting off
these goblins the elves pulled together, and began to set forth their
code and their plans. They also began to develop winning spacefaring
tactics. They flew to other spheres and spread the word. They showed
other elves how to build the ships and taught them the E.I.N.
way. And so the Navy spread.....
