I'm a bit leery of allowing dwarven mages. It brings to mind those
absolutely shitty GH novels by Rose Estes where one of the supporting
characters is a dwarven *archmage*!! Actually there are several dwarven
mages throughout her GH books.

As I said in another post, dwarven priests run most of the ships. The main
reason for entering space was to smash some gobbo's and stop them from
raiding the settlements. Once they found there were orcs and other scum
they decided to journey to space more often.
