Ahem.

Yes, the Nimar. The White (and Black) Wizards of Solaris. The
Order of the Tower.
        Wizard with a capital "W."
To answer that, I have to violate one of the rules I set for this
list after a flame war (roughly a year ago).
In terms of mechanics, the Nimar are Avangions, as detailed in the
Dark Sun source book "Dragon Kings." That includes the level 10 spells, and
that along should encourage all GM's to keep the Nimar as NPC's. Actually,
there are only two of them around at the moment, but others could come along.

Historically, Cartania went through a series of wars that were
ripping the place apart. Among the participants were an order of Wizards
known as the Nimar. However, there was dissention among their ranks, and
the Nimar started involving themselves in the political forays of the
"lower" peoples.
I made this up well before Babylon-5 came along, BTW.
The "Magic Wars" almost sent Cartania down a path similar to what
Athas suffered. That is, it nearly destroyed the place. Furthermore, the
more powerful political leaders of Cartania realized that much of the
destruction was the result of these troublesome wizards from that spooky
tower in the Southern Hemisphere. Many of the Nimar were hunted down. Very
few were killed at this point, but they were chased off planet. To insure
that the continuing squabble between White and Black Nimar didn't continue
to rip apart Cartania, one of the Nimar, Traxoth, sacrificed himself to put
a magical shield around the planet.
While off planet, the Nimar continued to bicker among themselves,
and in the end, there were only two left. One of them, Darran-Koor (from
the White team), went into hiding on Athas, and became what the locals
called an Avangion. The other, a nasty piece of work named Montrazar, had
prepared himself to enter lichdom, should he be killed. He resurfaced 750
years later, and worked behind the scenes for a while. Darran-Koor had
predicted many of his tricks, and prepared for them.
Montrazar was defeated in the Eternal-Wanderer fanfic "Solaris: Song
of the Nimar." Darran-Koor is still floating around somewhere, and Tiegorus
of Maplegrove is now learning the ropes from him.
