     Well, I've always assumed it was just another name for gunpowder. I
recall, though, another take on it by someone who contributed to
Earthspace. He had Venus as a partially Giff-dominated world (if I
remember correctly), and the Giffs made most of their money off
specially-treated peat moss that was processed into a form of
smokepowder.
