Sorry to sound facetious, and someone may have already posted this :

Aren't mutators just demi/human Xixchils?  Why introduce a whole school of magic? Why
not just hire a Xixchil?  Or better yet play a Xixchil.  Having done so myself, the mutator
might be a lot less likely to cut and paste the monster manual when the consequences are he
gets dropped off on the nearest asteroid for "enhancing" the ships crew.

"Captain, that squidship that is signalling us for assistance appears to be infested with bat
winged, double jointed, photosynthesizing grommans!  Shall we open fire?"
