In a message dated 97-03-05 12:00:26 EST, you write:

<< The question to ask if we want a logical explination is "What
do computers do?" In reality, all computers do is add really fast.
Why did we need something that adds really fast? Because mathametics
were becoming complicated, and sometimes many iterations were required
to come up with a valid solution. Why did we have complex math? Because
the hard sciences (namely physics) were becoming more complex in involved.

I have another take on computers in my little gaming world. A highly
magically developed society with a sphere-wide empire developed what is known
as Spell-Circuits. The idea was taken from a crashed alien space ship that
went through a reality shift and entered Wildspace.
Spell-Circuits are like computers in that several gems or items are
enchanted and linked together with mithril wire. Example: You touch a stone
outside your house that is enchanted to deliver an "activation spell" when
touched. The mithril wire delivers the "activation spell" to several globes
enchanted with Continual Light, as well as to a stone that holds an
enchantment for Unseen Servant that unlocks and opens your door.
Spell Circuits have enabled this culture to create hundreds of little
magic-tech devices, as well as enormous 100+ ton ships called Starjammers.
The sphere is very Star Trek in flavor, and the starjammers are much like
starships. There. I admitted it before anyone could point and say "Hmmph!!
Sounds like STAR TREK to ME!!"
