That's the way AD&D does, but I really doubt it works like that
in almost any other system... (: For instance, if I wanted to become
a Physicist instead of being a Computer Guy (8th level), I could advance
either at any rate I chose. If when I reached 3rd level Physicist I decided
to focus on Computers again, I could, without any penalty (except maybe
a job switch).

Officially, you also can't use any old class skills until your
new class is higher in level than your old class without penalty. Does
that mean that if I was moving next to the particle accelerator and
saw a computer that I wouldn't be able to use it?

That's why I allow almost any combo (within limits) of dual- and
multi-classing, with the rule that I, as GM, can control where some of
the experience goes.

Sorry, had to get that out of my system... (: And I still like
the ROM idea.
