Greetings!
Loads of great ideas, where shall I start?
As to the option of enlisting new allies the Thri-Kreen and K'r'r'r were
mentioned. Magus Zeroc and Tavenji contributed valuable data on the K'r'r'r
(thanks a lot, Magus and Tavenji!). Magus wrote:
"K'r'r'r are the spider-people introduced in the Legend of Spelljammer boxed
set. They, unlike the other races, were born in deep space, and think naturally
in three dimensions (and thus the design of the unity ships). Priests of the
Spider Queen (who bears a resemblance to Lolth, if she's not Lolth...) control
the unity ships with special ornamental canes (K'r'r'r helms), which function as
portable minor helms. These helms, and the k'r'r'r mental structure, allows the
unity ships to unite. They always travel in fleets, coasting through space in
search of worlds to gut and use as a meat locker (and yet they are LN!). Note
that they can also be found in jungles."
Tavenji added some more information as to the Unity Ships:
"The K'r'r'r... O.K. These pests are large spidery guys with upright torsos.
They hold that Wildspace is their natural domain and that all within it
(including worlds, people) are resources to be exploited. Their Unity Fleets
are very devestating because each 30 ton ship can join with another to form
craft larger than the usual 100 ton limit (as far as how large, that is never
said. DM's perogative). They use a special kind of helm called, suprisingly, a
K'r'r'r helm, an ivory staff that works like a portable minor helm for anyone
else, but with which the K'r'r'r can link up control of
several vessels at once. This maneuver only works at tactical speeds, so when
the fleet arrives, it arrives one ship at a time. This information along with
monster entries is found in the Legend of the Spelljammer boxed set (now at
selected toy stores for a wickedly low price!)."
From the information Magus gave me, I got the impression that the K'r'r'r don't
have a homeworld and/or outposts, rather cruising through space. Thus they might
not feel endangered by the Vodoni at all. In a similar vein Eugene commented on
the question of the Thri-Kreen joining the Alliance:
"They *could* join an alliance, but why *would* they? Has the Vodoni Empire
harmed them at all? Why should they send out their ships to die just because
some elves want a bit of help?"
My thoughts precisely. The Alliance, respectively the PC diplomats ... :-),
might overcome this problem with some brillant diplomacy however, depending on
what they offer the Kreen for joining the Alliance or how successful they are in
convincing the Kreen that they will be the next victims of Vulkarans War
Machine.
IMO, the K'r'r'r pose an even greater problem though. From what Magus and
Tavenji wrote as to their nomadic behaviour ("They always travel in fleets,
coasting through space in search of worlds to gut and use as a meat locker ...
They hold that Wildspace is their natural domain and that all within it
(including worlds, people) are resources to be exploited") I've got the feeling
that the other spacefaring nations will not view them in the most favourable
light! After all, no one asked the Scro and the Goblinoids to join the Alliance.
And I always wondered who had the hare-brained idea of inviting the Neogi to
join! My PCs were clever enough not even to >ask< the Neogi and Beholders - and
I think they've done well in doing so! The K'r'r'r don't strike me as
trustworthy allies. The Kreen seem to be a much better option here. Any other
suggestions as to what races could be induced to join the Alliance?
Kent
