Why would people rush to get these things? Just because somebody
developes a new technique for mounting more weapons onto a ship, doesn't
mean that everybody would rush out and install them or ships.

IMHO, if people wanted more weapons on their ships, they'd just
put more weapons on their ships... (: No need for escalation, a happy
medium has already been reached. I see these weapon mounts as being used
by a small, specialized group, similar to Dougal Beilby's "Stinger"
fighter.

I have wondered the same thing for quite a while. *Random*
encounters are rare, as are deep space battles, but *forced* encounters
are possible, at least in my universe. IMC, spelljamming speed isn't
constant. Short bursts of speed are possible, but they tire out the
mage very quickly (or burn a victims life faster). All ships leave
a magical "exhaust" which can bee seen with a detect magic spell (see
the Dweomerborn entry in MC9), which allows them to followed. It also
helps large fleets stay in formation. A ship travelling at "cruising
speed" can be caught by a "boosted" ship, and can be prevented from
leaving if it's SR is too low.
