According to the boxed set, a spelljamming mage can see as if
he/she was standing on the deck of the ship. I allow mages to have
a "floating focus" of 360 degree vision, i.e. they can see all around,
but can only focus in one direction.

The way this is explained is contradicted all over the place.
I think the boxed set says pretty much what you do, but some ships
require -- like the vipership -- require only the spelljamming mage,
which is just silly. (Then again, viperships are silly around.)
Explain it how you want, but be consistent, and don't be afraid to
adjust the numbers in the boxed set.
Hope that helps.
