I'm thinking of making helms non-indestructable to keep salvage
down. They usually (90%) crack or break when a ship is destroyed. It
doesn't solve the problem of PCs boarding ships, but it helps.

For other ideas on how to handle salvage, check out my web page
where there's an article by Kent Lerch.

Yes, they can't leave a large gravity well unassisted. Your
Flitter Helm makes it possible to have small, personal craft. I prefer
to keep small ships in the space fighter role, and out of the atmosphere.
But that's just me... (:

I've also been drifting back into the "mostly large ship" model
for my campaign. I keep helm prices high, but make it not worthwhile
for PCs to salvage too much. This makes small helmed craft cost
inneffective.

I can't remember, but I think it was a module. The "Helms" were
actually "copper canoes" with SR based on STR. They were used to check
out battle damage on the outside of the ship. Anybody remember?

Used by any class!?!? (: You've just invented the car.
