The thing is that they are fireing in a place where there is no gravity so
the range is much greater. While a heavy billista may only go 1000 yards (?)
in one round it dosent need to wory about droping one foot per second or the
wind caring the bolt astray like in the real world.
Now as to flying mages (and flying mounts) being the biggest threat to a
flying ship I don't know about that as it depends on the tactical speed the
ship can muster. I have a chart that changes TS into flying movement I will
see if I can find it. But how would you like to be flying against a
hammership that rams you. Rember that each hull point equals 10 hit points,
so if the ram hit you you would take 60 hit points of damage, god forbid that
the hammership had a +3 ram that would equal 90 hit points of damage or
enough damage to make a dragon situp and take notice. But eather way you
would still need to make a save vs. death and even if you made it that is
still enough damage to take most if not all creatures out of the air.
But what about the other weapons as you cannot allways ram some one. If I
rember right a hammership has 2 heavy billistas & 1 heavy catapult which
equals out to about 90 hit points (maximum damage). Not bad, not bad at all
as I don't know very many flying creatures that can take that kind of damage.
Of corse a invisible flying mage who casts a wall of force in front of a ship
going say TS 3 or 4 would do some very bad damage to the ship as well as the
crew. Say TS1 is just equal to a normal ram and every TS point above that
doubles the damage, i.e. TS 4 would be 4X normal ram damage. So a hammership
going a TS of 9 and ran into a wall of force would take 54 hull points,
extremely bad for the ship as the hull has only 60 hull points.
Yes, flying mages and flying mounts would be a big threat to a flying ship.
But not the biggest threat. I think the biggest would be other spelljamming
ship's held in reserve for just this thing. While there would be some ground
defenses butthey would not be anywhere neer 100% effective maybe 30 to 40%
effective.
