The story mentioned is called "Forbidden Flight," and it does indeed involve
a trip of a spelljamming ship to Athas to recover a fabled artifact, AND the
person who made it.

To get in and out of the sphere, a psionic formula was used to perform
something akin to a "passwall" on the sphere wall. For the various mages
and clerics on the ship to maintain the magical abilities, the crew used a
special elixer that acted like a "ring of spell storing" in liquid form. In
other words, they brought their own "magic" with them, knowing (or
suspecting) that Athas would drain their reserves quicker than normal.

The healmsman had a constant problem keeping the helm focused, because Athas
was essentially leaching away some of it's juice.

"Forbidden Flight" is perhaps the best fantasy fan-fict I've ever written,
so I'm prone to brag about it. <snicker>
