I know that there are at least 3 subspecies of tohr-keen (maybe more, I don't really follow DS) and that all 3 species are specific to a particualr location. This sounds more like some sort of evolution of the Thri-keen, possibly a social one, given that most of the differences seem to be social, and that the genitics are close enough to allow for interbreeding. So what does this give us? A closed sphere, with at least 4 subspecies of Thri-keen, including spell using and psionic members. What doe we have in the rest of the universe? One species, non spell using or psi using from what references I have, plenty of evidence of an earlier civilisation, yet no idication that any spell using Thrikeen ever existed, not even a standard helm on any ship, old or new, that i;ve seen, just the Crystal Helms. There was even a member of that old civilization rescude from flow stasis, and, while he seemed to be a priest of the TK religion, he had no spell ability. No, even ignoring the fact that the Sphere is closed, 3 of the subspecies are ONLY found on Athas. That implies they developed there from the parent race, which MAY have come from outside, but even the thrikeen of Athas are different from the TK everywhere else. If the TK had started on Athas, then spread out, would there be indications of the other subraces and the spell using ability, as well as the psionics, SOMEWHERE. No, it's more likely that the parent race evolve to fit the various niches on Athas (in 4 different ways) that every other TK in the universe changed in exactly the same way, while in very different enviroments, magical and otherwise, thru out the universe. But that's just my opinion, based on what is, essentially, circumstantial evidence. And Occam's Razor.
