In a message dated 96-09-05 20:21:16 EDT, you write:

<< Well, the original "space travellers" used technology that is not
understood at all. It had something to do with pulling energy right out
of their environment, instead of from a mages. At least that's the
current theory. This race was the one that seeded the universe with
animals found on various planets. They may also have had something to
do with putting many world on the 24 hour day, 365 day year, etc. cycle,
though they could have just taken advantage of a natural phenomenon.
 They vanished VERY long ago.
The empires that came afterwards also used modes of transport
which are still unknown. They were also very varied. The Reigar empire
used their Esthetics, which generated a natural "motive force" in wildspace
and used an as yet unknown means of travelling between the spheres, though
it is theorized that it involved planar travel. The Thri-Kreen had a means
of "folding" a gravity plane, so as to provide motion. It is unknown how
they were able to attain high (spelljamming) speeds. Some theories state
that the dwarves use similar technology in their forges today.
When the "modern age" began (~2500 years ago), the first travellers
used brute force methods of getting out of gravity wells. Giant ships with
high powered Fly spells, "burp" teleportation (consequtive short distance
teleports or blinks) for interplanetary speeds, ships drawn by giant
birds, and so on. Everybody had their own way of doing things. The
elves tried to grow ships similar to Reigar esthetics, but failed. What
they ended up with would eventually become their crystal ships.
Then the arcane came. They started introducing all sorts of ways
of getting around, including the "modern" spelljamming helms (~1200 years
ago). These helms were very underpowered, and had bad spell/power ratios
(4 or more levels per point of SR). These engines very cheap and plentiful
enough to be used by everybody. Humanoid races expanded and started to
encroach on surrounding territories. The elves, who took to spelljamming
as a race, were the only ones powerful enough to try and stop this
expansion. With their few non-elven allies, they fought back the enemy
forces. Near the end of the war the modern manowar line was developed,
and spelljamming started to become what it is today. What is now the
"minor helm" was developed ~700 years ago (about the same time as elven
armadas and flitters), and "major helms" ~350 years ago. (Yes, armadas
were built before major helms. They used "lowtech" techniques to move
around, and were *very* slow, serving more as stationary space stations
than big battleships. Armadas were also much bigger than today.)

Some more random info. Furnace helms were independently devoloped
by non-arcane sources during the Unhuman War. Less efficient Lifejammers
where developed by the arcane *for* the goblinoid races before the war.
In fact, the bad guys didn't start using real helms until near the end
of the war. Artifurnaces don't exist. Mind flayers used raw TK to
move their ships about when they first entered the void.

There it is, a quick overview of space travel technology and
some of it's effects on history.

< looking up from the paper > very, very Intresting. Do you have some facts
to back this up?
