What the book says is that , due to their racial telepathy, all know if one
dies.

Telepathy *is* their only means of communication, and the one on the
Spelljammer seems to have gone insane because of being cut off from the other
arcane due to the "privacy" feature of the Sp[elljammer, ot because of
distance.

No, actually his insanity was a majjor plot device for a possible method of
escape, and he'e needed alive to make that escpae, as I recall.
