Well, I'd unsub and resub when ready to read it again. Try sending:
"Unsubscribe spelljammer" to: listserver@?????????.??.uk. When you want to
rejoin send: "Subscribe spelljammer (your name)".

If you want to stay on the list but not recieve mail, I'd send: "Set
spelljammer nomail" to the same address. When you want to start up again
send: "Set spelljammer mail".

Oh, and don't use the quotes ("").
