That's because that's what we are told in the MM, SJ, and PS write ups.
Astromundi tells us that their main interest in space is to sell a Sphere to
the Tanari'i.

Couldn't it just be a desire to keep their monopoly to maximize profits? That
is the cornerstone of a merchant's ideal, after all.
