I was the one who originally posted the question, although responses
were few and far between.
    My answer, BTW, is... yes.
My reasoning for this is based on how I view magic in my campaigns,
which may not work for everyone.
In my AD&D campaigns, magic is magic is magic. There are different
sources of magic, but they are all essentially the same energy. When a
mage casts a spell, he is manipulating local magical energy. When a
priest casts a spell, he is channelling it from his god. And when a
shaman cast a spell, he is channeling it from spirits.
Magic, though, can be aspected, or "flavored", so certain effects,
spells, or items can only affect or be affected by certain types of magic.
I came up with this idea based on two things. First, most of the
spells in AD&D that affect magic or other spells do not distinguish by
type. A clerical Dispel Magic will work on Mage spells, and vece versa.
I decided this is because they are fundamentally the same.
Second, helms seem to have no problem working with either type of
spellcaster. Of course, one could say that they were designed to work
for either, but that sounds like a lot of work. Plus, I think they would
make cheaper versions that only use one or the other.
These are just my own ideas and concepts, of course, and others will
have their own theories.
