Subject: Re: Lewis Pulsipher's ship design - LONG
Hi gang. A few days ago, Lewis mailed this long HTML document to the list.
It concerns ship design. I'm trying to determine why his message bounced,
but in the mean time, enjoy!

Richard (mod)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     I have attached (we'll see how it gets through) a large file
     concerning SJ ship design. I discuss the big size inconsistencies we
     see in the ship diagrams (I don't need to point out the
     inconsistencies in number of weapons on ships), then present a set of
     rules to ratinoally generalize ship designs and costs.

     I have converted the file to HTML in the belief that most of you will
     be able to read it that way; I can supply it in the original
     WordPerfect version if necessary.

     I cannot see on the list messages that I post to it; if I see no
     responses, I may have to post it again (threat?) to make sure it got
     through.

<P>Spelljammer Ship Design &quot;Inconsistencies&quot;</P>
<P>As I looked at the deck plans for various Spelljammers, and look at the
relative size of ships illustrated on the wall-poster paintings provided with
several TSR publications, I came to realize that the TSR people had done nothing
to try to relate the tonnage of a ship to its size or its deck space. So I
(roughly) counted the number of 5 by 5 squares on the deck plans of many common
ships, and compared this to their tonnages, with extraordinary results as shown
below. This shows the ratio of squares to tonnage, varying immensely from one
ship to another...</P>

<P>On the face of this, you might say that 4 or 5 squares of deck plan per ton
of ship would be reasonable. But there doesn't seem to be a lot we could do to
redress the imbalance in existing ships, other than to change the size (in feet)
of each square according to the ratio. 125 square feet per ton is easy to
calculate. For example, the Squid, which is very much penalized, might have
squares that are 45*125/119=47.27 square feet per square, or 6.875 feet on a
side. And the Whale's squares would have to be 3.23 feet on a side.</P>
<P>Unfortunately, that's not a very practical change to make, in practice. And
of course it won't fit with the &quot;official&quot; length and breadth
dimensions... Perhaps all we could do is redraw each deck plan with a reasonable
number of squares.</P>
<P>(I'd interject here that some ships have rounded topsides--no squares on the
deck plans-- while others have flat decks with plans. I'd say that the topside
deck is &quot;free&quot; squares, to be used by the designer or not according to
how much protection is wanted for crew etc.)</P>
<P>The ship design rules in War Captain's Companion could not be called either
thorough or practical, and certainly don't address the problem described above.
So this started me toward devising a set of ship design rules that could come
close to producing the standard ships, that would specify the number of squares
of deck plan (which is much more important than the actual size of the ship, in
most cases), and that would enable referees and players to decide what designs
are &quot;reasonable&quot; and what are outlandish. </P>
<P>Spelljammer is clearly a &quot;universe&quot; of frozen technology. Ship
designs of centuries ago are still used, in some cases. Weapons haven't changed
in centuries, nor have propulsion systems for the most part. This contrasts
with the world of today, where any ship design rules would become obsolete in a
decade or two. But as we move into the past we find a much slower rate of
change in technology, for example in the days of ships-of-the-line. So I tried
to devise a set of rules that would fit every ship; and I now change, or simply
disallow, any design that doesn't fit, barring intervention of *big-time* magic
in the construction.</P>
<P>Where these rules do not reproduce Spelljammer ships well is in
&quot;cargo&quot;.
 I confess that this doesn't bother me, since a real warship will only have
cargo available for its own crew and weapons, even though a lot of space that
*could* be used for cargo will actually exist. </P>
<P>Spelljammer Ship Design Rules/Examples</P>
<P>The idea here is to design your own ship. A referee can design special ship
types, while an individual might see what kind of ship he can come up with,
always within constraints set by the ref of course. This is meant as a
substitute for the wholly inadequate rules in the <I>War Captain's
Companion</I>.</P>
<P>The process involves deciding initially on a tonnage for a ship, then
fitting parts, paying tonnage costs for such things as crew and maneuverability
and weapons. You'll see that if you want a warship, you aren't going to have
much extra cargo space (though space allocated to crew could be used for cargo,
at a cost in endurance).</P>
<P>Step by step example (refer to guidelines following):</P>
<OL>
<LI>  <B>Choose tonnage</B>.  I'll try 25.
</LI>
<LI> <B>Helm</B>. Choose number of helms. I'll take one, and room for two
helmsmen, which will cost 1 ton plus .5 for the second helmsman. Total
expended: 1.5.
</LI>
<LI> <B>Landing</B>. This is a scout, and must be able to land on water.
Cost .1 x 25 = 2.5 tons.  Total expended: 4 tons.
</LI>
<LI>  <B>Ram.</B>  None
</LI>
<LI> <B>Maneuver</B>. I plan to run, not fight, so maneuverability isn't
very important.  I'll take class E.  That's .1 x 25 =2.5 tons, and no monetary
cost. (This can be improved later by the addition of crew...) Total expended:
6.5 tons.
</LI>
<LI> <B>Armor Rating</B>. I'll take the standard AR7 and improve it one by
expending funds (250 x 25 = 6,500 gp) to AR 6.   Still 6.75 tons.
</LI>
</OL>
<P>8. <B>Weapons</B>. I'll take two medium weapons with a total crew of 6.
The weapons cost 4 tons. Total expended, 10.75 tons.</P>
<P>6.  <B>Sailing crew</B>.  I'll take the standard maneuverability, so I
expend .25 x 25 = 6.25 men, which I have to round up to 7. (Note at this point
in construction that sometimes you may as well go up one level in
maneuverability. I could add two more crew and gain one maneuverability class:
.35 x 25 = 8.75)</P>
<P>9. <B>Crew</B>. I need six crew for the weapons, plus seven for sailing
(the helmsmen are already taken care of). I want one extra crewman, plus room
for two adventurers. Total 18, requires 9 tons. Tonnage expended 19.75.</P>
<P>Now I see that I have enough tonnage left to expend 2.5 to improve my AR one
point, to 5. 22.25 tons expended. At this point I could take the other 2.75
tons in cargo. Or I could take 2.5 tons for improving maneuverability to D, but
that would also cost me 2,500 gp. Or I could take two more crewmen (one ton)
and improve maneuverability to D. And so on.</P>
<P>I used 16.75 tons for helm, weapons, crew, and cargo (I assume I took 2.75
tons cargo). I get 16.75 times 5 five-by-five squares of deck space (83.75
squares).</P>
<P>Cost is 500 x 2.75 (cargo) plus 750 times 22.25 (other tonnage) plus 6,500
for the improved armor rating, or: 1,375 + 16,687.5 + 6,500 = 24,562.5</P>
<P>Design Guidelines</P>
<P><B>Helm area</B>:</P>
<P>1 ton automatically; no crew cost for one helmsman. If a second helmsman is
desired, count as one crew (.5 ton); if second helm room, count 1 ton but then
no additional for any second helmsman.</P>
